Working in a children’s home is rewarding and fulfilling. However, there are many misconceptions and myths about this topic and it is important to shed light.
There is a misconception that all children in the centres have no family at all. The truth is that some of these children have a single parent (some who are in prison) and other relatives who may be willing to help but often limited with poverty, chronic illness or living in an unsafe environment that is risky for the child and this leaves them with no choice but to send their child to a children’s home because there’s guarantee for food, shelter, clothing and education.
Another misconception about children’s homes is that working there is emotionally draining with no rewards. On the contrary, volunteering to work at a children’s home has many rewards despite some experiencing challenges. It is fulfilling to see children thrive because you gave them support. Reuniting children with their families is also fulfilling.
It is also misunderstood that working in a children’s home is all about documentation. While it’s part of the job, children’s homes aim to build strong relationships and make a difference in the lives of the children.
There’s also a myth that one needs experience to work in a children’s home. Passion, Enthusiasm, empathy and commitment is what matters.
Smile Community Centre is pleased to welcome volunteers to come and support the children at the centre. Volunteering builds your skills as you gain experience and it is also fulfilling to make a difference in a child’s life.
